Channel 5 Mailer
One of a series of pieces commissioned during the launch of Channel 5 to explain to the viewing public why and how their tv's would be retuned to receive the new channel.
Now we've got an extra frequency to broadcast on, we've got a bit more retuning to do.
With a new frequency to broadcast on, 4,000,000 more people can say ... "give me five".
What new frequency?
Since your home was retuned for Channel 5, the Independent Television Commission (ITC) has given us an extra frequency to broadcast on, allowing us to bring Channel 5 to 4 million homes that would otherwise have been unable to receive it.
Why are you telling me this?
The British broadcast spectrum is very crowded. So it's possible that equipment connected to your tv (video's, cable or satellite decoders, PC's etc.) may be using our new frequency, and will need to be retuned to stop it interfering with your Channel 5 picture. (And vice versa.)
But I've already been retuned.
True. However, your home is in an area where the new frequency overlaps the frequency that your equipment was retuned for. There is a chance that the transmitter that your tv aerial is pointed at will now be broadcasting on the new frequency. If that's the case, unless your equipment is readjusted it could cause interference, and spoil your viewing.
How can I tell which frequency I'm receiving?
Easy. Welll be broadcasting a number of test transmissions daily, from 9-10 am, 12-1 pm, 4-5 pm and 9-10 pm.
All you have to do is turn on your tv during any one of these transmissions, use your video, satellite or cable tv decoder, and look for any kind of interference.
What if there isn't any interference?
If there's no difference to either picture or sound quality, you're fine. Your aerial is still receiving the frequency that it was originally retuned for, there's nothing more to worry about, and we won't need to bother you again.
...But what if there is?
If there is interference to either the picture or sound during the test broadcasts, this means that the transmitter that your aerial is pointing at is now broadcasting our new frequency, rather than the one your home was originally retuned for.
What do I do?
Call us on 0500 555 255, and we will come back and retune your equipment to the new frequency. This will get rid of any interference. The retuning will be free of charge.
Although Channel 5 starts on March 30th, it will not be broadcast on the new frequency until later in the year. Which, unfortunately, means that you will have to wait a few months before we can give you 5.
What if I don't want to wait?
If you don't want to wait, you should contact a reputable local aerial installer to see whether an aerial adjustment would allow you to receive signals from a different transmitter broadcasting the original frequency.
If you subscribe to cable tv, your local cable operator may be able to help.
I've got some more questions.
If you'd like to know more, call us on 0500 555 255, and we?ll give you all the help we can.
